a time when the grown-ups have got to do their jobs. >> if you don't run chris christie, romney will be the nominee and we'll lose. >> we begin tonight with the continuing effort to assess the damage and begin the cleanup from hurricane sandy. president obama traveled to new jersey today, the state hardest hit by the massive storm to meet with hurricane victims and state officials led by republican governor chris christie. the two men toured southern new jersey on the ground and from the air over flooded streets, flattened houses and piers washed out to sea. reporters did not accompany the president and governor christie as they flew on marine one, the president's helicopter. governor christie, who had been spending most of his days prior to the storm attacking the president on the campaign trail, today thanked him. >> i want to thank the president. we spent a significant afternoon together surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coastline. we have lots of challenges. our challenge now is to get back to normalcy. and i cannot thank the president enough for his personal c
's praised him so e fusively and that's chris christie. they got aboard marine one. administrator fugate was with them. they traveled about an hour. long beach island, ship bottom, seaside heights, seaside heights, in particular, as we have seen from our media helicopters hit particularly hard. the president has landed on the way now to a community center that's sheltered as many as 200 at the worst part of the storm at a place outside of atlantic city. there we expect the president to tour the shelter, helping out those in distress and then make a statement, steve. i think we can expect the president to try to project calm, concern, empathy, authority if you will. what we'll not see the president project is any sort of overt political age toll this. this is all very serious and chris christie by his side as he had all afternoon. >> it's still tore and talk about the tone of the president today, not overtly political. everything is politicized with chris christie who's very emotional in the situation. this is the jersey of his youth be destroyed. >> reporter: right. >> how does the presi
hurricane sandy. he was greeted by governor chris christie. and the two men just continued to work on this partnership that they got going when it comes to recovering from this storm. in fact, they've been doing it before the storm hit. now, these were the sites the president saw as he flew over the jersey coastline. image after image of flooded homes, destroyed boardwalks, and washed out roads dominated the president's trip. on the ground, president obama and governor christie visited relief shelters throughout the area. the governor offered this assessment of the president to storm victims. he means what he says. it's important that he is here. christie had more praise later on. >> we spent a significant afternoon together, surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coastline. we were on marine one together, to be able to show the president that personally, had an opportunity to see it and discuss it at length, and going over to the shelter here, being able to meet with folks and see the president and his concern, the concern all of us have for making sure that things get ba

is heading to new jersey. he'll join governor chris christie to see the devastation on the ground himself. meanwhile, governor romney, he's back on the trail in florida. there's still just six days until the election. what does that tell us about where the campaign stakes are really in play this morning. good morning from washington. it's wednesday, october 31st, 2012. happy halloween. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get right to may first reads of the morning. we're still a long way from recovery. today after hurricane sandy's devastation we're seeing the very first signs of a return to what may be some normalcy as millions attempt to put the pieces back together. this hour new york city mayor michael bloomberg will ring the opening bell at the new york stock exchange which plans to be fully operational despite blackouts and flooding in lower manhattan. two of the area's major airports, jfk and newark in new jersey have opened with some limited service this morning. but new york's laguardia airport remains closed after major flooding. overall, nearly 19,000 flights can

the election this is also being viewed through a political lens. governor chris christie, a romney surrogate, will show the president the destruction, while new york mayor michael bloomberg politely declined a visit. this morning the president got a substantial briefing on what's happening and the federal support that's being provided for the recovery. some are calling this a commander in chief moment. but at the very least, this hurricane has complicated a very close presidential race. take a look at the latest national polls of the president obama has just a one-point lead among likely voters. three new swing state polls show the president still in the lead, although with a margin that is shrinking in florida, virginia and ohio. and instead of campaigning, the president went to the red cross in washington, d.c., yesterday. >> this is a tough time for a lot of people. millions of folks all across the eastern seaboard. but america is tougher. and we're tougher because we pull together, we leave nobody behind, we make sure that we respond as a nation and remind ourselves that whenever an amer

. bulldozers and national guard removing heavy debris from the streets. chris christie has said new jersey's 83-mile shoreline remains the most damaged that he's ever seen anywhere. one of the hardest hit areas to the north of us, point pleasant beach. let's send it up to ron allen who has the latest from there. ron. >> reporter: what was the patio of a restaurant here along the beach front, i think i'm standing on what's left of the roof right now. this is an example of the kind of damage you see up and down the jersey shore. if you pan inside here, you see that it is completely destroyed. the waters and sand came racing up here, the sand inside is about two or three feet deep. the irony of all this, if you look way inside there, there are some things on the shelf there, some napkins and ketchup bottles and cups that were undisturbed. but this area is a complete loss. coming back this way, this is an area that was supposed to be protected. out here along the ocean, there was a high sand dune just beyond the fence that used to be tlchl the sand dune was about 12 feet high, 30 yards long and tha

the president of the united states as he tours with chris christie today? >> i think they want to hear specific things about how they're going to get help and how soon it's going to come. when people think about the federal government and fema and the bureaucracy i think it's daunting. people are worried it's going to be red tape and programs that are not going to essentially solve their needs in the short term. you know, the short-term needs people have here is basically to get the debris away from their homes to secure structures to make it safer. there are still thousands of people in shelters who are going to be running out of food and supplies and those kinds of places up and down the coast and further inland. power, of course, is out to 60% of the entire state. so before -- once you get those things re-established, then you can begin to start rebuilding and really getting your foot -- your feet back on the ground here. it's going to take a while. i think people are encouraged that the president is coming. it certainly shows that he's concerned about what's happened here. but as always, i

and unthinkable. that's what the new jersey governor chris christie is calling the damage from the super storm sandy that slammed his state. and just look along the jersey shore. or what was. tonight, officials are blaming the storm for more than three dozen deaths across the country. and more than 8 million customers, not people, 8 million customers have no power. most of them in new york and new jersey. look at this map here. the damage from the monster storm extends as far as west as michigan. the blue areas are the flooding. the red is wind damage and the white, that's snow and lots of it. parts of west virginia have already gotten more than 2 feet of snow. the blizzard warnings are in effect in more than a dozen counties until tomorrow afternoon. new jersey, of course, took the direct hit from sandy just south of atlantic city. officials say the casinos are okay but the storm washed away part of the board walk there. and in other towns along the jersey shore. farther north just outside new york city emergency workers are using boats to rescue hundreds upon hundreds of people from homes th
new jersey governor chris christie on a tour of some of the areas hardest hit. we are also getting a better look this hour at what governor christie is calling the destruction too widespread for words. that includes long branch, 50 miles south of new york city. right now you're looking at a swimming pool, standby, full of debris from a building torn to shreds by wind and water. the sand stripped away and piled in the streets exposing beach heeds. we go south to spring lake, new jersey. that town is over 100 years old. a lot of folks go for vacation and the weekend that kind of thing. the longest portion of the boardwalk in the state of new jersey. you can see the remnants of it at the water line, the pounding surf tore off each and every board. further down the coastline there is total destruction in the beach community of seaside heights, home of an iconic amusement park, and now look at it. something about these images, something about the roller coaster, the ferris wheel in the ocean, it's just wrong. for generations families have spent their summers here, trace gallagher record

and massive flooding turning the casino town into a raging river. governor chris christie calling the damage simply unthinkable. even before it made landfall the storm did not spare states further south. residents of maryland, delaware, washington d.c., in northern virginia among the millions of people up the coast all the way to maine without power. the superstore slamming into new york city, flooding in some ways and tunnels with record -- a record surge of seawater that breached the city's downtown electrical system, including that supporting wall street. the new york stock exchange and the markets closed for a second straight day with much of the city still paralyzed at this moment. the eastern seaboard literally littered with homes watched from their foundations, streets filled to the rooftops with cars filled with water. in one case, a blazing inferno in queens, new york, a blaze that destroyed more than 80 homes in one community. fema officials say, sandy is not anywhere near being over either end as of right now this storm is moving inland, and dumping more than a foot of snow in wes
